In Her Own Words: The nth Dawn Powell Page

___________________________________________________________________________________

Dawn Powell once said  Alcohol is the co-pilot but Gossip is a novelist's best friend.

Often referred to as her favorite New York novel, TURN, MAGIC WHEEL
was first published in 1936 at a time when the written word was not limited
to one hundred and forty characters.

Speaking of characters, page 37 of TURN, MAGIC WHEEL features
a table full of them  discussing the potential fate of a young composer.
Dennis (Orphen) is the protagonist of the story.

Footnotes
Whether or not this book inspired Ernest Hemingway to describe Dawn Powell
as his favorite living author is subject to debate.

What is not debatable, however, is that TURN, MAGIC WHEEL is Ms. Powell's
"Hemingway novel." But a fictional Mrs. Hemingway is the obsession
of  the fictional novelist, Dennis Orphen.

The next Dawn Powell page is here.
