Dawn Powell Quoted "Through The Looking Glass"

______________________________________________________________________________________

Morry could never forget that walk in the rain
with Nettie Farrell. To be huddled under an umbrella
with a woman he hated, to smell her violet talcum,
her scented hair, to feel her warm plump hand
squeezing his elbow, her body pressing against his,
so that not for an instant could he forget that it
was Nettie, Nettie Farrell, and that he detested her.

He said nothing to her, tramped straight through
all the puddles leaving her to scamper along
beside him with tight, prim little steps.

  1. But…did he indeed "hate"?
    No intoxication to the senses?
    He would wait
    if even with those defenses.

      I think not.
      The "hate" is a warping
      of a warm heart.

Think of "Hate" as a warm heart
      subject to climate change.
