A STEIGulary Poem

______________________________________________________________________________________

Other 1936 New Yorker covers are here.
If cartooning were a sport
there would be a major league
with padded catchers crouching
and holding the ball

If cartooning were a sport
there would be a major league
with umpires reacting
to every pitch

If cartooning were a sport
there would be a major league
with clean-up batters on deck
blasting out funnies

With heroes in full color on Sunday
with Monday morning hangovers

If cartooning were a sport
there would be a major league
with heavy hitters
driving in funs
and sillies

If cartooning were a sport
there would be a major league
and history would have
its Babe Ruth
but in truth

If cartooning were a sport
there would be a major league
instead of the Babe,
there is William Steig

Then who is Lou Gehrig?
Whataya know?
That would be
Peter Arno
