Father Frank: "First Photograph" & Last Baseball Game

______________________________________________________________________________________

December, 1929

Savatore & Marie Oliverio are flanked by five of their children. My father
is standing behind my grandparents. My namesake is in front of them.

This Christmas family photograph was taken in either Belle Vernon, PA
or Harlem, NY. At that time, Father Frank was minus seven months old.
My grandmother was two months pregnant when the picture was taken.

April 21, 2007

In 1936, my Uncle was six years old when he attended his first baseball game.
"It was at Yankee Stadium and Joe Dimaggio was a rookie."

In 2007, we were driven to Shea Stadium moments after Father Frank
attended his last concert and the performer was our chauffeur.

Father Frank, R.I.P.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

One November night 45 years ago, after five or so years of my living in darkness, after a night
of alcohol and drug abuse, he opened the rectory doors to me at 3 a.m. He invited me in
and heard my confession–the sacrament that forever changed the direction of my life.
He was the single most influential person in my conversion and healing.
And I know that I am not the only one he helped.

Dear Father, you were authentically a good and wholesome human being.
You are true priest with the heart of the Good Shepherd!

Deacon Steve

Quoting Truman Capote

When God hands you a gift, he also hands you a whip; and the whip is intended solely for self-flaggelation.

Quoting Dawn Powell

Nobody could rattle Morry Abbott, he was armored against everything because he knew
it was your business to be hard just as it was the world’s business to throw javelins at you.

If he allowed himself to be drawn to a strong person like Jen, she would inevitably crowd
into the romance and be equal to the hero–this was disturbing and not romantic,
romance was between a man and love, not between a man and woman.

Jealousy was gnawing at her constantly and for this illness there was no rest. Day and night
veins burn and somehow do not burst with the fever. There can be no peace
in remembering a past moment of security, such moments are gone...
Ecstasy leaves no mark, pain alone cuts deep.

Ernest Hemingway Once Said...

_____________________________________________________________________________________

No less than Ernest Hemingway said "My favorite living writer is Dawn Powell."

_________________________________________________________________

Dawn Powell wrote about Mr. Hemingway the year after he commit suicide:

No first-rate genius was ever a family man and no reason for family
to think they understood him or knew him just because he was obliged
to board with them for 18 or 20 years.

They are proud, jealous and bewildered when the world finds a swan–
didn't Sister get better grades in Geography? Wasn't Ethel a prize
debater? Wasn't Phil a leading man in the high school play?
Where did this swan get his genius?

But Powell may have had Hemingway in mind on August 14, 1957:

The complete egotist not only writes but fights every minute for his writing
and his own professional advancement, losing no tears or blood on family
or friends or even difficult lover.
