Footnotes
Pi has actually been carried out to ten trillion decimal places.
CR stands for Comic Relief.
576 = 24 x 24
93 = how many pages Mr. CarPeo posted during the month
when I became a 65 year-old teenager.
0 = how many pages he would have posted were he not
under the influence of Mrs. CarPeo.

The Binary Magic Of Personality
____________________________________________________________________________________
Pleasant, glib, warm and witty one day,
icy and incommunicado the next.
A mental disappearing act to entertain the analytic masses.
But it confuses the hell out of anyone who tries to get too close.

____________________________________________________________________________________
Youth is about acting before thinking. Adulthood is thinking before acting.
Youth dances with delusions. Maturity cuts in on that dance
and changes the music.
Adulthood is about denying what once made you happy
and not stepping on your own two feet.
But not always.
Thankfully.

The Blogs WOGGS Of Dawn Powell
____________________________________________________________________________________
Ninety-nine Years Ago...
Dawn Powell, then 19,
drew this picture of
Bossie & Bessie
It is excerpted
from her first diary
(still in existence).
The diary was named
Woggs
Written in 1915, more than forty-five annual diaries were to follow.
Here is a sample entry from Woggs:
At times I grow a bit weary of these tremendous jumps and bumps in my life
but I suppose--I know--that if life for me were a placid, smoothly-running path,
I would die of the tiresomeness of it.
Well, Woggs, we are destined for a hard ride in life, with many bumps and jumps,
but it will be a swift, breathless ride and we will arrive all the sooner.
So we may as well pull down our hats, button up our coats and hang on to our seats,
instead of pausing to speculate .... We've had a fine summer together--almost ideal--
but it's time now to worry about money and college. I did think I would borrow some
but I guess I won't. I'll get it someway. You'll hear great things of me, someday.
Goodbye, Woggs.
There are almost as many GoodFather of Math
pages dedicated to Dawn Powell
as there are Dawn Powell annual diaries.
All I have left to say here is that if you have
an author that you love,
your understanding of that author is not complete until you have read his/her diaries.
(Or, at least, read their letters.)
But if that author is alive and well today,
there may be no more diaries to read.
However, you can always read
theirwoggs blogs.
This image of Dawn Powell is from here
and the next complete Dawn Powell page
is there but she gets an honorable mention
from a very special spider.

Hazy Picture, Clear Memory
____________________________________________________________________________________
In 1961, I was very mature for a 6th-grader
if and only if
maturity can be
equated with
stupidity.
Sixth-graders were
the upperclass students
of PS 193.
We were allowed
to eat our lunch
in the auditorium.
The three children
you see are the girl
on the left, me,
and the girl on the right.
But to protect the innocent, no other 6th-graders are included in the illustration.
We were soon to graduate from a public elementary school but unlike virtually
all my classmates, I would be transferring to a Catholic school.
I wanted to leave a strong impression on these two girls,
henceforth, known as Miss Blue and Red.
In 1961, like all good children, I hated spinach but–on this particular day–
my mother had made me a spinach & eggs sandwich.
Seated in the front row, I had much room to maneuver.
So I stood up and tossed the sandwich on the floor
of the auditorium.
I proceeded to stomp on the sandwich and not stop until
it was as flat as a tortilla.
Then I tore into two pieces what remained of the spinach & eggs.
I tried to give half to Miss Blue and the other half to Red.
But both girls ran out of the auditorium screaming.
For the remaining month of school, I had an inspirational effect
on the two young ladies.
Whenever they saw me walking down the hall,
they were inspired to walk
in the opposite direction.
But I am a fast learner: I never again foot-stomped on a sandwich.
However, about a dozen years after this incident, with my left hand
I squashed a spinach-grilled cheese sandwich
as if it were a housefly.
A man standing nearby shouted "Holy Panini!"
I was told that, years later, he became an extremely wealthy restauranteur.

A Tale Of Three Tails
____________________________________________________________________________________
Three Cat Tail Cacti
Growing in a bunch
I saw them
I photographed them
Then I went home for lunch
I gave names to the
Two sisters and a brother:
He is Big Finger
They are Red Paws
And The Other
Giving them a GoodFather page–
That was my only wish
But not until after
I ate some tuna fish.
Three cat tail cacti
Made me think of Giotto
Because nothing else
Rhymes with iPhoto
Into that folder
They went
Until this verse (from God-knows-where)
was sent.

On the Eve Of Memorial Day
____________________________________________________________________________________
Immersed in mud & soil
We give them a day
and call it Memorial
One thing, however,
is absolute
a paper poppy image
can be soooooo cute
In a third ear, however,
can often be heard
Cute is, sometimes,
not the right word.
There is nothing cute
when a real gun does shoot
There is no fun thrill
when you are forced to kill
All life is unthrilled
if you are the one killed
We now live in a world
where insanity does spiral
where a paper poppy memorial image
Is guaranteed to go viral.
But I will not hesitate to apologize to anyone offended by the tone of voice
on this page.
That tone happens sometimes when I think of the soldier I remember
most on Memorial Day: Ray Peterssen.
He was in Viet Nam in 1968 but did not become a Viet Nam casualty
until 2012, when he died due to having been exposed to Agent Orange.
A picture of Ray appears on the absolute bottom of every
GoodFather of Math page.
A separate apology is due Daliscar, the photographer
responsible for the genuinely sacred image above.

The Paulus & The CarPeos
____________________________________________________________________________________
The time has come...
The Paulus said to speak
of just one thing
Not shoes, nor ships
nor sealing wax
But how my flower
took wing.
It all began
three fortnight ago
When I was just
an embryo:
An amaryllis embryo,
new to planet Earth
In a plastic bucket
full of dirt & dearth
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
The sun was shining colorlessly
casting all in black & white
Mr. CarPeo was on the deck
reading something he did write
⬅That you can see
but what you can not
Was when Mrs. C handed him
something jellied and hot
All she said–
as luck would have it
Just stuff it inside
that plastic bucket
Her words were firm
her words were bold
Thus, he just did
as he was told
All of the above
is truly to be believed:
That is how & when
my flower was conceived.
Three fortnight ago was April 13–
that you may have surmised
That was when this amaryllis
was magically fertilized
By something stuffed
into a plastic flowering pot
It was something jellied
it was something hot
The flower is Paulus the Amaryllis
with one last thing to say
Tomorrow...to one and all...
HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY

Almost A Deadly Sin

"What else is new?
Thousands of people do that every day.

"Don't you want to know why
I cropped this particular photo?"
"No. This is a confessional–
a place for real sinners.
What you did is suitable
for discussion at a
coffee house."
"Thank you for not
classifying me as
a real sinner."
"However, for wasting my time,
your penance is to...
say two Hail Marys
while standing on
your head."

"That's nothing.
With my eyes closed,
I can say ten Hail Marys
while standing on my head."
"Hold the bravado, Paul.
I can smell the deadly sin of PRIDE."
"OK. I'm outta here."
"Thank God!"

Found on the floor of a Ford Factory.
Just like the rest of my adopted photogenic family.

it was money spent with devastating destruction or exhilirating profit margins for

Footnote
The soundtrack for this page should be no mystery
for those acquainted with musical history.
Un-apostrophed above, the song title, I did write:

Let Them Drink Sweat...On The Moon???
____________________________________________________________________________________
There is a sports drink
called Sweat.
I kid you not...
It is being sent
to the moon.
I kid you not...
Japanese drinks company Otsuka has announced plans to send
a can of its sports drink Pocari Sweat to the moon.
The 1kg titanium container will contain a small amount of the drink,
albeit in powdered form, in the hope it can be mixed with the water
now known to exist there...
Along with the beverage there will be a number of silver disks
etched with messages by children from all over Asia.
In the words of the company:
"The time capsule contains the children's dreams."
Every child whose message is inscribed receives a free
"dream ring" –a ring pull specially destined to open the tin.

The page title is also the soundtrack but it is neither The Beatles' cover version
nor the alleged original by Carl Perkins.
It is Blind Lemon Jefferson's 1927 composition, Matchbox Blues.

Forty-Eight More Words From Flann O'Brien
____________________________________________________________________________________
Every Yang has its Yin
Go west on a road that gives you pleasant traveling,
fine sights at every corner and a gentle ease
of peregrination that will persuade you
that you are walking forever
on falling ground.
But if you go east...you will marvel
at the unfailing bleakness
of every prospect.

The God-Daughter of Joseph Cornell

Joseph Cornell is here.
He is the artist
whose name is
synonymous
with the term
"shadow box."
His "God-daughter"
is not there ⬇
But a sample of her art
is what you see here.
Her name is
Ona Zimmerman.
We love her shadowbox
but, at this time, we
cannot provide
an appropriate
hyperlink.
"We" is Mr. & Mrs. CarPeo.
It was the latter who described
Ms. Zimmerman as
"A mini-ist not a minimalist."
The title of her shadowbox

When I Was Exactly Minus Nine Years Old

This was a $.15 Magazine Cover
The artist is Helen Hokinson. She is a member of the 1800 CLUB.
More than 1800 of her illustrations have graced the pages
of New Yorker Magazine.
Sixty-eight of her illustrations appeared on the cover.
My birthday gift to you is two more examples
of Ms. Hokinson's cover art:
According to New Yorker lore,
when crows flew over
Helen's garden, they
laughed so hard
at her scare crow
that none of
the birds
ever disturbed
what grew there.
