"What are you laughing about?"

"The way you picked up that cookie
before chewing it ever so slowly."

"Could you be more specific?
Which cookie are you talking about?"

"The licorice coconut one...
You are such a creature of habit!"

"You're calling me a creature?"

"I'm sorry, Mr. Sensitivity, but that is correct."

"I guess that makes me the Creature of the Black Macaroon."

"And the creator of cheap puns."

"Guilty as charged."

Another Thing I Didn't Know About FSF

______________________________________________________________________________________

Besides the FYI on his birthday page, I did not know that,
in 1922, Scott Fitzgerald wrote science fiction.

"You are now on the only five square miles of land in the country that's never been surveyed."

"Why hasn't it? Did they forget it?"

"No," said Percy, grinning, "they tried to do it three times.

 The first time my grandfather corrupted a whole department of the State survey;
the second time he had the official maps of the United States tinkered with—
that held them for fifteen years.

"The last time was harder. My father fixed it so that their compasses
were in the strongest magnetic field ever artificially set up.

"He had a whole set of surveying instruments made with a slight defection
that would allow for this territory not to appear, and he substituted them
for the ones that were to be used.

"Then he had a river deflected and he had what looked like a village up on its banks—
so that they'd see it, and think it was a town ten miles farther up the valley.
There's only one thing my father's afraid of," he concluded, "only one thing
in the world that could be used to find us out."

"What's that?"

Percy sank his voice to a whisper.

"Aeroplanes."

The story gets its name from this exchange:

"The Schnlitzer-Murphys had diamonds as big as walnuts—"
"That's nothing...That's nothing at all.
My father has a diamond bigger
  than the Ritz-Carlton Hotel."

When the story was anthologized
in SIX TALES OF THE JAZZ AGE,
Mr. Fitzgerald wrote a preface for
The Diamond as Big as the Ritz:

[It] was designed utterly for my own amusement.
I was in that familiar mood characterized
by a perfect craving for luxury, and the story
began as an attempt to feed that craving
on imaginary foods.

Happy Birthday, #118

______________________________________________________________________________________

Leonardo DiCaprio should be singing
this post-humous birthday song
for F. Scott Fitzgerald
louder than anyone.

Scott Fitzgerald
He was born on September 24, 1896
Leonardo not only starred in THE GREAT GATSBY
but it has been rumored that DiCaprio will portray
F. Scott Fitzgerald in the FSF novel-turned-biopic

Anyway, here is the song:

Happy Birthday to you
Happy Birthday to Scott

Your brilliance is everything
That this sad world is not!

******************************************************

FYI:

Fitzgerald is credited, in the Oxford English Dictionary
with the first citations of the words T-shirtdaiquiri,
stinko (slang meaning ‘of a very low standard’),
and even wicked (as in ‘excellent’ or ‘remarkable’).

With the exception of stinko (which comes from a letter of 1924),
all of these early uses of these words are found in Fitzgerald’s
first novel, This Side of Paradise.

Perhaps this earlier novel deserves more recognition?

The next Fitzgerald page is here.

A gift from the Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald Museum

Why Is She Not Better Known?

______________________________________________________________________________________

In the NEW YORK TIMES, Lisa Zeidner asked:

So why is she not better known?
You could accept Tim Page's explanation,
in "Dawn Powell: A Biography," that her
"dark, mordant attitude toward the world . . . rankled."

She was simply too unsparing in her satire,
offending the very people who might embrace her.

As Powell wrote in her diary:
"I think my great handicap and strongest slavery
is my insistence on freedom. I require it."
                                                                                                     Before ever reading
a Dawn Powell novel,
I read this quote from Ms. Zeidner:

Powell is wittier than Dorothy Parker,
dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald

When I first read that statement–
less than two years ago,
I would have sworn I smelled horse manure.

It cannot be true,
I thought, at that time.
Today, all I can say is...
Ms. Zeidner, thanks for proving me wrong!
You are 100% correct
But I will never stop
reading & re-reading
F. Scott Fitzgerald.

NOT reading Fitzgerald
is very bad for my mental health.

Scott Fitzgerald
(1896-1940)

My alleged mental health is restored by reading

F. Scott Fitzgerald Estate Wondering Why The Hell

The Two Antonyms Of Faith

______________________________________________________________________________________

MAJOR REPAIRS WILL BE UNDERGONE SHORTLY

The obvious antonym of FAITH is SCIENCE

But If FAITH gazes through the Looking Glass,
there is another antonym:
WORRY

If all good Christians extended that one HOLY HOUR on Sunday...

MORE PARTICULARLY...
If all the good Catholics extended that one Holy Hour on Sunday...
If that one magnificent expression of faith extended to the 24/7
cycle of life...and all these good people refused
to worry (or stress) about this,
that & the other thing.

If the 24/7 cycle had faith that things would be okidoki,
that–seasoned with a few select prayers, common sense,
and intelligence–things would all work out fine.

Worry and stress would suffocate
and Pope Francis would have
a much easier job.

This equally applies to all good human beings...

The Best Career Move That Ever Happened...

______________________________________________________________________________________

To Sheryl Crow...................was the death of Amy Winehouse

Sheryl is easy on the eyes
but the ears have a problem

because musicians weren't designed to be looked at

Amy Winehouse
(1983-2011)

Musicians exist first and foremost...
to enlighten us with their musical talents...
bona fide musical talent...not the kind of talent
you get from your hairdresser.

Oh sure,  All I Wanna Do
is a great song but that doesn't mean
you spend most of your time
in the beauty parlor or with your publicity people
and ignore honing your craft.

Now this pathetic creature did nothing but hone her immense talent.
Amy worshipped the Shirelles. She kowtowed to the Ronettes.

Therefore, she knew  the true path was Back to Black.

Unfortunately for brilliant young singers, honing your craft can mean
over-exposure to drugs and the death walk.

In Amy's case, that meant NO to rehab.
Genius is a bitch goddess.

Regarding the absence of Amy Winehouse and the presence of Sheryl Crow:
it is easy to like a Hyundai when there is no Mercedes on the road.

In Sheryl's case, the true path to success means marketing uber alles.
It has worked wonders for Madonna.

The next Amy Winehouse page is here.

A Staggered Poem by Pact ©

______________________________________________________________________________________

We simply simplify
                             everything.

Accept what people
                              say. It's easier.

Who has the time to question
                                             everything?

We are worker dogs and if the media
                                                         tells us,
Well that's it!

Franklin fell in love with his
                                            cousin?
Well that's the official story.

Yet society has become so
                                        judgmental

By vote, illusion of power: Who was
                                                         MLK?
Mr. Smiley must know.

The Trail Of Veiled Ignorance

______________________________________________________________________________________

NFL’s elaborate security network

is supposed to protect league

from trouble... and justice is supposed to exist

...This is Roger Goodell...
How soon will he become Roger Goodbye?
Not only did Ray Rice have to go but so does the CEO!

I long for the days when the name Rice in  professional football
meant Jerry Rice and it was associated with dignity, grace, and talent.

But dignity and grace have gone through the looking glass
and got caught in an elevator.

Curious minds
want to know:

Was there or
Was there not
a police report
involving an
unconscious woman
& a knockout blow?

I wouldn't buy a used car from this man who has used up all his lies
to protect his multi-million dollar CEO salary and his multi-billion
dollar football business.

But I will Never Ever stop watching NFL Football or cease
rooting for the New York Giants and the New York Jets.
