Once upon a time, a student wrote
(4 + 1) rowny 5
That student was in Poland and the time
would have been in the sixteenth century.
And then along came Robert Recorde.
Robert Recorde (1510-1558) |
He was rotating the tires on his chariot
when he got the idea
to rotate a symbol.
The symbol looked like ll
and meant that two lines
were perpendicular.
And thus, by rotation,
the equal sign was born.

Once upon a very recent time, an artist named Nihalini
inspired me to finally create the Recorde page.
I first wanted to do so over a year ago.
Time is funny that way.
