Quoting From John Steinbeck's First Novel

____________________________________________________________________________________

John Steinbeck

The sword shall be thy first bride.

The murder things, emeralds,
diamonds, and gold;
the sins of men,
committed for them,
make them haunt the ocean.

Folly and distorted vision are
the foundations of greatness.

Battle and tactics are nothing more
than glorified trickery. War is won
by the man who sits back,
like one cheating at cards,
and confounds his
enemy with
trickery.

If he were perfectly honest
and gave a strict accounting in nine consecutive dealings,
then the tenth time he might steal as much as he wished,
and no one would dream of suspecting him, so only he
had brought the nine times forcibly to the attention
of all men.

He never stole anything. Theft is criminal.  He would never
steal but he did pay tribute to himself.

Modesty is only a kind of beauty patch which is put on
when there are visitors.

Honesty may be a ladder to a higher, more valuable crime.

France, Britain, and Holland had seen in these islands
a good hermitage for their criminals, and for years
they unloaded worthless human freight on the Indies.

The mountains are a kind of poultice for a man's
abstract pain, among them he laughs,
far more than he cries.

She was beautiful, truly, but hers was the harsh,
dangerous beauty of lightning.

Inverted but Quotable

The most human
of all traits is inconsistency.

In 1940,  Scott Fitzgerald  said CUP OF GOLD was his favorite Steinbeck novel.

By then, John Steinbeck had written nine novels, the most recent–published in 1939–
was Grapes of Wrath.

They could not have been very lost. If they were,

Surrealist artists–

But the man on the far right of the group photo appears to laughing the loudest.

He is Glenway Wescott.

The woman making him
laugh is Dawn Powell.

I am presently reading
The Happy Island,
my ninth Powell book.

I experienced  my first
Dawning less than
one year ago.

Dawn had 2 years + 4 months to live.

There are at least twenty Good/GodFather  pages dedicated to Dawn Powell.
Let each of them give eyesight to the blind.

I always thought eyesight to the blind as a quote from Sonny Boy Williamson.
But he got it from a book called the Bible.

I will promise to read the Bible if you promise to read a Dawn Powell book.

That's an offer we both cannot refuse.

The next Dawn Powell page is here.

Jean Paul Sartre?

She could also see
it needed no key

the black hole

In her face:

Nothing happened,
but I must
append

Alice In Emptyland
has come to

THE END

absolutely maintainence-free

But with genuine history:
talking to a girl
while sitting

In 1862, Alice In Wonderland,
by Lewis Carroll, was first written

While Madness took a different form
across the ocean from Great Britian

Where for American soldiers
many bullets were bitten

Boys from North and South

Boys from South and North

Because their governors
made them fight real hard

Sorry

I badly need a nap

Give Us A Coke, Luv

______________________________________________________________________________________

According to the New York Post,
that is what John Lennon said
to Mitzi McCall and Charlie Brill
Exactly fifty years + one Sunday ago.

McCall & Brill were the comedy act
that preceded the Beatles' second set
on the Ed Sullivan Show on 2/9/64.

An audience of supersonically loud
teenagers were in no mood for
the unknown comedy duet
while the Beatles were
waiting in the wings.

The New York Post article begins:

Charlie Brill has a message for Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.
“You owe me a dime,” he wants the remaining Beatles to know...

Brill... gave Beatle John Lennon some change for a soda backstage at
“The Ed Sullivan Show” the night of the Liverpool lads’ American debut Feb. 9, 1964.

You can read that date on this image of a 48" by 16" section of a backdrop
drawn on and autographed by, from top to bottom:

Ringo Starr
George Harrison
Uncle Paul McCartney
John Lennon
__________
__________
__________
__________

I hereby submit a recent headline from our good friends at Art Daily:

Beatles-signed backdrop from The Ed Sullivan Show, Feb. 9, 1964,
emerges for auction 50 years later

What may be the most unique "Beatles Autograph" is expected to sell
for $80,000.
__________
__________
__________
__________

What may be the most reasonable settlement of John Lennon's unpaid
dime debt was suggested by Katrina Kompromise, an investigator
at the INSTITUTE OF INANE RESEARCH:

A dime is one/tenth of a dollar and 1/10 of ten cents is 1% of  a dollar.
Let the auctioneer allocate 1% of  the highest bid for the Beatles'
autographed backdrop and give it to Charlie Brill & Mitzi McCall.
That would be a very fair settlement of Mr. Lennon's debt.

The next Beatles' page is here.

Exactly Fifty Years + One Sunday Ago

____________________________________________________________________________________

Mitzi McCall and Charlie Brill–
a husband & wife comedy team,
performed on Ed Sullivan Show
on February 9, 1964.

In rehearsal, Mr. Sullivan thought
their act was "too sophisticated
for the mosty 14-year-old
audience."

McCall & Brill returned to their
dressing room. While "feverishly
reworking their routine."
But...

There was a knock on the door
and then they saw him
standing there.

“This darling kid,” says McCall [fifty years later],
 says....‘Give us a Coke, luv.’
And Brill gave him a dime.

The couple, only 23 years old themselves at the time,
figured out he was with the band they had heard about.

“As he’s leaving, I look out the window at the crowd,”
 McCall says.

“Can you believe this is all for you?” she asked the young Brit,
whom she later learned was John Lennon.

“And this cute kid said, ‘Ahh, it’s not for me. It’s for Ringo.’ ”

The Beatles played two sets that night, and the comedy duo
went on right before the second one.

“A lot of times during our act, I couldn’t hear Mitzi,” says Brill.
“The crowd was still yelling, screaming, hollering.”
“They didn’t want us,” McCall adds.
“It was like, ‘Who are those idiots? Get them off.
We want to see our lads again.’ ”

-From the New York Post

The Euro Goes Full Circle

Euro Crisis- by ESCIF
(Grottaglie, Italy)

It is appropriate that "ESCIF" created his street art in Italy

because the Institute of Inane Research discovered

Escif's direct descendent: a Renaissance

ceiling scribbler who got lucky.

Escif's ancestor used the street name "MC 'n Jello"

In 1505, he was commissioned to work flat on his back

and paint the entire ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

History changed his name to Michaelangelo

I Kept My Promise!

____________________________________________________________________________________

Happy Birthday #93 was a hard act to follow
because only fifty of my Mother's birthdays
were spent on terra firma.

Gratitude for Mrs. CarPeo's card is exceeded
only by my gratitude for her understanding
why February 15 is more important to me
than Valentine's Day.*

Mr. & Mrs. CarPeo celebrated Valentine's Day
the best way humanly possible: privately.

A splendid time was had by both!

But now it is the morning after
the morning after...

I grope for meaningful words.
I hope to find wisdom.

Rather than climb the nearest mountain with a a guru on top,
I reach for a book by Flann O'Brien, a man of many names
and ten times as many talents.

Modern writing, it is hoped, has passed
the stage when simple events are stated
in the void without any clue as to
the pschological and hereditary
forces behind them.
Flann O'Brien nee Brian O'Nolan
a/k/a Myles na Gopaleen
John Duffy's Brother

Think of Flann O'Brien
as Ireland's best-kept
military secret.

His novels, journalism,
short stories, and plays
are explosively funny.

BUT...

This page began with a reference to my Mother.
Therefore, I also needed a quote about motherhood.

The fate of the mother we exalt at present—on screen and in sob story.
Flatter her, “respect” her—and leave her alone. She never had
the imagination to consider her children as persons
when they were young, so they are unable
to think of her as a person when she is old.
F. Scott Fitzgerald

Happy Birthday, #93

____________________________________________________________________________________

At least for now, this image is permitted a "border crossing"
because the birthday girl's handwritten note is from
the same time period  as the photograph.

Designer = Mrs. ©arPeo     Upper Inset = Husband     Lower Photo = Son     Lower Inset = ?

This will be the only page I am writing today because my Mother's photograph
is an extremely hard act to follow (especially when accompanied by a picture
      of my Father).

All of the yardsticks in the world could not measure my gratitude to Mrs. Carpeo
      for designing this page.

Hocus pocus
out-of-focus
the boid looks slim

Yet, it was very nice
to find a boid of paradise

SO...the boid

THEN...weather warranted
a whole white bunch of pix
this one she sent him
from zip 10536

SHE ...of course,
you may already know
call her Mrs. CarPeo

Let it snow...Let it snow...It did snow...
all through the night and  the morning
call it  "global warning"

But to dampen my fear
the snow fell there
and not here!

The Psychiatrist's Patient

____________________________________________________________________________________

"Doctor, the only reason I work is so I can afford to tell you
how much I hate my job."

"But Andy, your success as a political consultant
affords you pleasures most people can only
 dream about."

"Their dreams are my nightmares and..."

"Instead of nightmares, I want to discuss
  the poem you snail-mailed me."

"Shit! You read it already?"

"You knew I would. Stop pretending."

"Yes, Dr. Freed."

 DOCTOR HANDS PATIENT THE POEM

"Today, instead of an abstract discussion
  about the dream/nightmare dichotomy,
  we can get very specific.
  Recite it, please."

"I do not believe a word they say
But I will listen to their stories
  Every night and day
  As long as they know
  I am not going away."

"Who is they?"

"My brothers and sisters in New Jersey."

"What do you not believe?"

"Everything they say regarding Julia's death
 and her estate."

"Julia is the Aunt who became your guardian?"

"Yes. She inherited five children when our parents died."

"Didn't you tell me that you flew 20,000 miles
 to get her neighboring relatives
to visit her in the hospice?"

"Yes. Four flights to New Jersey to organize
  family reunions amongst siblings
  who otherwise would never
be caught in the same room."

"But why do you listen to their stories?"

"Because no one in California knows about this:
Every day...Aunt Julia would take little Andy
to the library. It stopped when she caught me
  stealing a book."

"What book was it?"

"It depends on which brother or sister you ask
and I'll be damned if I remember. But
the point is I lust for stories about
 growing up in Princeton."

"How old were you when your parents died?"

"Nine. Maria–the youngest–was two."

"Why didn't you attend Julia's funeral?"

"Because I was afraid of how I'd react
in front of my siblings: my ego might
have gone elephantine or I could
 have drowned in my tears."

"And your ego is what you meant by
  As long as they know
  I am not going away."

"WOW! That is the other reason
I am here three days a week."

"Hold the sarcasm, Andy."

"I apologize, Dr. Freed."

"Apology accepted only if
the next five sessions are focused exclusively
on the responses you gave me today.
  See you tomorrow."

"But Doctor, I didn't hear the timer yet."

"You will not hear Rama Lama Ding Dong again
  until after the fifth session."
