Muhammed Ali vs Ronald Reagan Title Bout (1999)

____________________________________________________________________________________

THE DATE
November 2, 1999, a day of otherwise inconsequential state and local elections.

THE PLACE
Underground Lewis Carroll Saloon in Piscataway,  New Jersey.

THE EVENT
Great Americans' Checkers Tournament

THE CONTESTANTS
Parkenzheimer Twins, Muhammed Ali & Ronald Reagan.

THE SPONSORS
Parkinson & Alzheimers Research Foundations

THE GAME
A checkerboard was set up in a boxing ring.
Ali wore gray trunks. Reagan wore white.
The tournament  lasted one month.
The tournament lasted one  game.

Napping was  allowed between moves.

When Ronald Reagan nodded off during play,
twice he knocked the board over.
Both times all the pieces had to be replaced
and sanitized by the Secret Service.

While Ali slept, he dreamt of tickling
George Forman in a Social Security Office.

THE MASCOT
 Checkers, the Presidential dog.

Richard Nixon challenged
the winner of the tournament
but no one would allow him
to play because everyone knew
Richard Nixon–posthumously–
would get caught cheating.

The Godfather Of CarPeo (#1 In A Series Of 4)

____________________________________________________________________________________

In a former incarnation
in a European nation...

Paul Peaux did pose–
vest-to-nose–
with a hound named
FoundFame

Carol, then 10 years old,
to Parrain, the marble rolled
Parrain did carve and mold...
Imagination takes hold

Time travel is  fun–a game of chance
where you do the calendar dance
with friends, artists, uncles or  aunts
Thus we visit 19th Century France

To translate Parrain
I'll save you the bother
It is French for Godfather

Time travel is pure play-act
But now I must respect fact:

THE CROWN PRINCE
AND HIS DOG, NERO
(1865)

JEAN BAPTISTE CARPEAUX
(1827-1875)

The artist's name rhymes with Harpo

Powell To The Playwright

____________________________________________________________________________________

If my sword can pink that old pachyderm hide
of the public, then I’ve got what it takes.

The playwright’s necessity is neither to pacify
nor please but to refurbish the mind,
houseclean it, shake it up
ready to meet problems,
and not to feed
complacencies.

Time was the thing. You would say that Life and Death were the ingredients of a play,
but it was time that was used, by the bolt, by the carload. Time cut up in squares,
rolled in balls, distorted, braided, twisted, painted, now it was a flag,
now a flag cut up into bits, now magically it was whole again.

"I can picture the shadows."

"I love that image."

"Thank you."

"But could you be more specific."

"The shadow government–the midnight brokers
  who govern the elected officials."

"Then give me a serving of paranoia soup."

"Dr. Spin–the uber-shadow–tells the elected
how to win the  electorate over to illegal
  recordings of private conversations."

"What did the good doctor tell them?"

"To record a radical rant that will rile the masses."

"What a sterling idea!"

"The culture will be so disturbed by the content of what
is recorded, no one will object to the invasion of privacy."

"Three cheers for Dr. Spin and his Dumb Down Orchestra."

"That wouldn't be dumbing down the masses.
It would just be giving  them a sucker punch."
