Originally called "word links," Lewis Carroll invented the game in 1877
but the game was called "word golf" by none less than Vladimir Nabokov,
the author who translated Alice in Wonderland into Russian.
The player is given a start word and an end word. To win the game,
the player must change the start word into the end word progressively,
creating an existing word at each step.
Each step consists of a single letter substitution.
WORD GOLF was invented in the 19th Century,
and re-named in the 20th century but I am
giving it a 21st Century make-over...
Wherein the start word and end word
can be proper compound names.
Intervening "words" can also be proper names.
The first step is a "word" substitution.
Exactly one letter can be replaced by empty space.
I will provide hyperlinks where necessary.
Start words = Scott and Zelda
End words = Franny and Zooey
**********************************************************************************
Scott and Zelda .........................................“F” in F. Scott Fizgerald stands for Francis,
by substitution
Scott and Zelda = Francis and Zelda
Francis and Zelda >>> Frances and Zelda
Frances and Zelda >>> France and Zelda .....The last letter of Frances has been replaced
by empty space
France and Zelda >>> Francy and Zelda
Francy and Zelda >>> Franny and Zelda
Franny and Zelda >>> Franny and Melda
Franny and Melda >>> Franny and Meldy
Franny and Meldy >>> Franny and Moldy
Franny and Moldy >>> Franny and Moody
Franny and Moody >>> Franny and Zoody
Franny and Zoody >>> Franny and Zooey
**********************************************************************************
The better to disguise the Fitzgerald inspiration, J.D. Salinger pulled a simple switcheroo:
he reversed the genders of the characters...Then it was time for the ultimate brilliance
of the most important author of my life: he endowed the psyches of Franny and Zooey
with zero resemblance to the original Scott & Zelda.
Franny yearned for the elimination of her ego while Zelda could never live a moment
without her ego.
If Scott were depicted at length in a bathtub, he would never allow that to happen
without a healthy bottle of gin at his side.
Bathtub Zooey’s choice of consumption was drinking up the Glass family atmosphere.

Footnote
This is the last of the official NINE SALINGER PAGES but they began here.
Meanwhile, another "Fitzgerald" page is there.
A page where Paul Oliverio provides a single link between himself,
J.D. Salinger, Kurt Vonnegut, and Elizabeth Taylor (entitled MEgotism)
is neither here nor there but can be found in Click-itVille.
