Richard Pryor was the host.
Gil Scott-Heron was the musical guest.
Describing the episode as "brilliant"
does not do it justice.
A poem was recited by Shelley Pryor.
Interplanetary travel would be required
to find a more magnificent metaphor
about the artist known as Richard Pryor.
You know, this being the season to be jolly and everything,
I’ve written a little story to help you get your jollies...
...and it’s about my most favorite place in the world,
the carousel in Central Park.
...
...
...
You see, once upon a time,
There was the most beautiful white carousel,
With two horses in love.
Now here’s their story I tell.
Now, the boy’s name was Ching,
And the girl’s name was Jing,
And their love was abounding,
A most wonderful thing.
Until one day...
Well, you see, Ching was a carousel horse.
Now, he was white out of one dozen.
But he couldn’t go up and down,
Like his uncles or his cousins.
Well, this made Ching
Very, very sad,
Because going up and down
Made children glad.
And every Sunday they would run to the park,
And ride on the carousel
Until way after dark.
But they wouldn’t ride Ching.
and that was a very sad thing...

On the third day of Christmas,
my own self gave to me...
That is the day I watched Disc 3 of the SNL anthology and it would indeed be
a very sad thing if you did not read the second half of Shelley Pryor's poem
before reading the rest of this GoodFather page.
Click here and take your time.
The rest of the page will be here whenever you return.
After watching a 1975 recital of an eloquent poem, curiosity was abounding
and I went a searching for...Shelley Pryor.
She is the mother of Rain Pryor, Richard's daughter.
Brooklyn-born, Shelley Bonis (her maiden name) is now
a well-respected astronomer with an asteroid named in her honor.
But that asteroid should have been named Ching or Jing or both.
